AAPL Certification Overview The Certified Professional Landman (CPL™), Registered Professional Landman (RPL™), and Registered Landman (RL™) designations are important steps in the professional development of landmen. Each step of the certification program measures a landman’s ability and professional skills at critical stages of career growth.
Certification
You are responsible for reading the current Certification Program, as amended, found in the AAPL Landman’s Directory. The application must be legible, be submitted on the currently approved form, and be accompanied by a $75.00 non-refundable application fee.
Application Procedure
When all parts of the application are complete, including all sponsor forms, your application will be reviewed at AAPL and, if complete, will be submitted to the AAPL Certification Committee for consideration. You will then be notified of the decision of the Certification Committee. If you have taken the exam, results will be given at that time. Including the time to publish your name in either the Landman or the Landman2, the total time to complete the application process should be approximately four months but could take longer depending on timing of publication and other circumstances.
Please be thorough in completing this application. Approval of your application is based on the information provided in your application and this is your best opportunity to illustrate your qualifications. Please note that the Certification Committee carefully reviews your responses and verifies the information provided.
· A. Application
Each applicant for certification must submit an application and the application fee to AAPL headquarters. All communication will be held in strictest confidence. The entire application process must be completed within 120 days from the date the application is received by AAPL. It is the responsibility of the applicant to monitor the time process and assure that all necessary parts of the application are accurately and timely completed, including sufficient verification from qualified CPLs. At the expiration of the 120 days the application may be returned to the applicant and a new application would be required to continue the process. · B. Verifications
Each applicant for CPL and RPL must be endorsed by three CPLs in good standing who fully verify his qualifications. These verifications must affirm that the applicant meets the stated and implied qualifications for certification and will describe only that portion of the applicant's work known to each. The sum of all verifications must reflect in detail the type, quantity and quality of the applicant's work history covering the applicant's required credit years. The endorsers also must attest to personal, professional, and ethical standards befitting certification. · C. Publication
Each applicant's name will be published in the first available official AAPL publication after the application is received at AAPL headquarters. · D. Examination
The candidate will be eligible to sit for the CPL or RPL certification examination at any scheduled time, upon the payment of applicable fees to AAPL. However, when and only when, the applicant is fully approved; having been evaluated and approved by the AAPL Certification Committee; will the applicant be advised of the results of the applicant's examination. The results of the applicant's examination shall be valid for only a period of one year for an RPL and two years for a CPL from the date of the examination or the date of the receipt of application by AAPL, whichever occurs first. The applicant shall submit an application no later than 60 days after taking the examination. Any required retests shall be taken during the above-described period. Ensuring that the application, approval and examination process is completed within the above-described period shall be the sole responsibility of the applicant. The candidate may attend a scheduled review and sit for the CPL or RPL exam prior to approval by the Certification Committee. However, doing so is done at the sole risk of the candidate and shall have no bearing on the approval process. Should the candidate not be approved there shall be no refund of any fees paid for the review and exam and the results of the exam will not be revealed. You must submit your application within 60 days of taking the exam for the exam to qualify.
Sponsors
Each applicant for CPL and RPL must be endorsed by three CPLs in good standing who fully verify the applicant's qualifications. Each applicant for RL must be endorsed by one CPL or RPL. These verifications must affirm that the applicant meets the stated and implied qualifications for certification/registration and will describe only that portion of the applicant's work known to each. The sum of all verifications must reflect in detail the type, quantity and quality of the applicant's work history covering the applicant's required credit years. The endorsers also must attest to personal, professional, and ethical standards befitting certification.
The Certification Committee will use the sponsor's responses to aid in determining the overall qualifications of the applicant, especially the applicant's work experience.
The Applicant Verification Form is to be submitted to at least 3 CPL sponsors (for CPL & RPL applications) and one RPL or CPL sponsor (for RL applications) and ask that they complete the form and return it to AAPL. When combined, the sponsors must cover the required total work experience. That is total years sponsored must equal or exceed the minimum number of work years required. That may require more than three sponsors.
The verification form must be completed by the sponsor, in the sponsor's own words. If a verification form is prepared by the applicant, the application will be returned and will not be considered again for one year.
Exams
You must be qualified to become a CPL or RPL to sit for the exam. Please complete the questionnaire included with the application to determine if you qualify. Those taking the exam should not rely solely upon the review in preparing for the exam. You are expected to bring to the exam your experience and general knowledge of landwork and land practices. To assist in preparing for the exam, AAPL will mail to each paid review registrant a copy of the course study guide.
You may take the exam prior to approval of your CPL or RPL application, but only if you qualify based on the questionnaire below. The results of your exam will have no bearing on the approval of your application. You take the exam before approval of your application at the risk of otherwise not being approved.
Results of the exam are not disclosed until the CPL or RPL application has been completed and approved by the AAPL Certification Chairman.
