The international financial crisis is hitting all of us directly or indirectly. In this situation engineering is very important for the society. Application of new research based knowledge and new technologies can give new solutions and new ideas for products and services. This is very important in a situation with numerous cut downs. Large numbers of engineers are loosing their jobs right now multinational companies are closing their plants in a number of countries, and small national enterprises might be reluctant to take in new engineering staff right now. A number of engineers might therefore try the solution of starting a new company alone, or together with a number of colleagues based on their collective expertise. In this situation continuing engineering education is very important, to support the engineering activity with new and relevant knowledge for this situation. We must as knowledge providers be in contact with the situation, try to be involved with the background and knowledge we have. The situation and the challenges will be new for many of us. We are however a community of individual experts coming from a big number of university based centres of expertise around the globe. We posses a big diversity of experience from different situations with engineering unemployment or situations with engineering staff moving from one sector to another. It is very important for us to remember that we can learn from each others experiences, we can together develop new concepts and methodologies for continuing engineering education. IACEE has formed a number of Special Interest Groups dealing with different aspects of CEE. Join the work in these Special Interest Groups together with experienced colleagues around the globe. You can sign up at the IACEE website (http://www.iacee.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=78&Itemid=194) and contribute to new development. |
The
Eighth
Forum of 21st Century
Continuing Education
in Guilin, China The Eighth Forum of 21st Century Continuing Education was held in Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China from November 12-13, 2008. The theme of this years Forum was the Development and Innovation of Continuing Education. There were 4 program breakout sessions, covering the topics of the Development Strategy of CE, Quality Control Assessment System, Training of Professional Technicians, Exploring Different Modes of University-Industry Partnership. 160 people from around China attended the Forum. Dr. Frank Burris, IACEE Council Member, Director of Engineering, Information Systems & Technical Management in UCLA Extension, delivered a presentation on the Continuing Education of UC and IACEE & Quality Measures for CE. The Forum of 21st Century Continuing Education was established in 2000 and co-organized by School of Continuing Education in Tsinghua University, the Continuing Education Center of China Association For Science and Technology (CAST), the Continuing Education Center of the General Armament Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and the UNESCO Chair on Continuing Engineering Education in China. Since the UNESCO Chair on Continuing Engineering Education in China is located in School of Continuing Education, Tsinghua University, the Forum has been chaired in turn by the other 3 organizations. The aim of the Forum is to explore the innovative ways to carry out continuing education programs, share experience and seek new directions in the continuing education. Since 2000, the Forum has been successfully held seven times and has great influence on the development of continuing education in China. In the future, the Forum of 21st Century Continuing Education will be more internationalized, integrating international resources and learning from the best practices of our international colleagues so that greater improvement of continuing Education in China could be achieved. The Ninth Forum of 21st Century Continuing Education hosted by School of Continuing Education, Tsinghua University is preliminarily scheduled to take place in Beijing on May18-19 2009, co-located with IACEE Council Meeting and 20th Anniversary Celebration on May 16-17, 2009. We sincerely welcome the participation of IACEE members and other international colleagues and friends. IACEE has a vast diversity in its membership. In this month's newsletter, we will focus on the National University of Singapore, home to the 2010 IACEE World Conference on Continuing Engineering Education. If you would like to be featured in this section, please contact us at info@iacee.org.
National University of Singapore The National University of Singapore (NUS) will be organizing the next World Conference on Continuing Engineering Education (WCCEE) in Singapore in October 2010. Simultaneously the ASEE Global Colloquium will also be taken place in Singapore with NUS taking a key role in organizing the event. Below is a highlight of the University for the information of IACEE members. NUS is a multi-campus university of global standing, with distinctive strengths in education and research and an entrepreneurial dimension. Its diverse and cosmopolitan community of over 30,000 students from 100 countries contribute to a rich learning and living environment across three campuses its principal 150-hectare Kent Ridge campus, Bukit Timah campus and Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School Singapore in Outram. NUS offers a broad-based curriculum underscored by multi-disciplinary courses and cross-faculty enrichment. There are 14 faculties offering courses from architecture to engineering to music. A special feature of NUS education is the global dimension of its courses in partnership with some of the worlds best institutions. NUS also enjoys a close teaching-research association with 14 national-level, 21 university-level and more than 80 faculty-based research institutes and centres. Research activities are strategic and robust, and a no walls collaborative culture forms the bedrock of NUS research-intensive vibrancy. A spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation promotes creative enterprise university-wide. This is aided by a venture support eco-system that helps students, staff and alumni nurture the development of start-ups into regional and global companies. NUS plays an active role in international academic networks such as the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU). It is ranked amongst the best universities in the world, and is well-regarded for disciplines such as Technology, Biomedicine and the Social Sciences.Colin C.F. Leung is the NUS representative to IACEE and serves and the Council and Executive Committee as the Vice President for WCCEE. Prof. Leung can be reached at cvelcf@nus.edu.sg.
