Have you registered for IACEEs biannual conference yet? The 10th World Conference on Continuing Engineering Education (WCCEE) will be held in Vienna, Austria next month on April 19-21. There are dynamic speakers scheduled: Dr. Gilsun SONG (School of Continuing Education, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China), Dr. Claudio DONDI (Vice-President of EDEN, President of SCIENTER, Bologna, Italy), and Prof. Dr. Erik DUVAL (Department for Computer Sciences, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium), along with several compelling sessions on CEE strategies, e-learning and e-teaching in CEE, and work-based learning to name a few. Add to this the pre-conference workshops on roadmapping and EFQM applied in management of change in UCEE, and managing the business model for a continuing engineering education program, and you can see that this years WCCEE is not one to be missed. There is still time to register at www.wccee2006.org. Last month, IACEE President Mervyn Jones spoke of the departure of an IACEE staff person. This month, I would like to introduce to you Hans J. Hoyer, who will be working with you to expand the reach of IACEE and further develop the IACEE mission and goals. Dr. Hoyer has lived and worked throughout Asia, Latin America, Africa, Europe and the Middle East; he speaks Spanish, Portuguese and German fluently. He most recently served as the Chief Executive Officer of World Links (a spin-off of the World Bank), a global learning network linking US students, administrators, professors and teachers with peers throughout the world via Internet for collaborative research projects focusing on teacher education, health, K-12 education, HIV/AIDS, sustainable development, micro-business, politics, gender issues, and integration of technology into learning. I believe he will be an excellent addition to IACEE. As always, I value your input and suggestions. Please contact me with your comments. Frank L. Huband |

Sachs, Director of the United Nations Millennium Project, spoke to the Organization of American States (OAS) on "New Approaches to Economic Directions in Latin America." He proposed technology as part of a broader initiative to tackle the triple challenges of economic stagnation, inequality and shocks from the human-ecological interface. Latin America, unlike Asia, he argued, had not focused on technology and in general did not play a leading role in the rise of the electronics sector, biotechnology and information technology. The speech can be viewed online at the OAS website. India's major science and technology organizations signed a five-year agreement with the ten-campus University of California System this month to carry out research in a number of areas. The move will dramatically strengthen joint research and educational collaborations, and will build on the recent US-India collaborations in engineering education, expanding the focus to a wide range of disciplines aimed at providing solutions to common pressing challenges that will yield long-term benefits to the competitiveness and security of India and the US. For the purpose of effective implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding, a bi-national Joint Steering Committee (JSC) is being established. World Bank Supports Technical and Vocational Education in Mozambique The World Bank Board of Directors agreed to support the technical and vocation education and training reform project in Mozambique this month, emphasizing the development of relevant skills as a way to improve economic opportunities and reduce poverty. The project is expected to improve access to post-primary education, increase graduation of Mozambicans with the skills, practices, and attitudes needed to fill technical positions, and create value-added knowledge and innovation in production. The project will have four components. The first is the development of an institutional framework, the second is the establishment of a standards-based qualification and assessment system, the third is quality improvement in training institutions and the fourth is a skills development fund.
IACEE's World Conference on CEE The 10th IACEE World Conference on Continuing Engineering Education (WCCEE) will take place in Vienna on April 19-21, 2006. The conference topics cover a wide range of aspects relevant for CEE such as: For more information, visit 5th ASEE Global Colloquium on Engineering Education Call for Papers The American Society for Engineering Education is seeking submissions for the 2006 Global Colloquium on Engineering Education. The Colloquium will take place October 9-12, 2006 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Colloquium will have three themes of major contemporary interest:
- Primary and Secondary Education
The focus of the Colloquium is on successful strategies for dealing with each of these issues. We encourage contributions that detail examples of what actions are being taken and what works and why, with supporting evidence. The deadline for abstract submission is 5 April, 2006.
The Call for Papers and Author's Kit are available in English, Portuguese and Spanish at www.asee.org/gcee2006/ .
