Secretary General's Corner

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Franz Reichl and Vienna University of Technology for hosting the 10th World Conference on Continuing Engineering Education. It was a most stimulating and thought-provoking meeting, with many excellent papers on CEE. If you were unable to attend this conference, you missed some of the finest presentations on issues faced by those involved in CEE. I highly recommend that you place the 11th WCCEE, to be held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA at the Georgia Institute of Technologys Global Learning Center on your calendar now it will be held during Spring 2008. To view a movie on the facility and Atlanta, please see www.iacee.org/WCCEE/11thWCCEE.rm .

While at the 10th WCCEE, you may have met other IACEE members with whom you would like to correspond. You may have asked for their card, and arrived home only to find that you misplaced their contact information. We can help the IACEE Membership Directory is available now, only for IACEE members. Contact us at info@iacee.org for your electronic copy. This will be sent to you as a .PDF attachment.

In each issue of the IACEE newsletter, we try to highlight activities of our members. Please consider contributing information on activities that are happening at their institutions. Whether it be new and innovative curriculum or a meeting which discusses current trends in education, these activities can spur other members to consider adopting a similar change.

As always, I value your input and suggestions.

UNESCO Site Sub-Saharan African Students Most Mobile

A story this month by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) shows that students from sub-Saharan Africa are the most mobile in the world with one out of every 16 students studying abroad.  "The Global Education Digest 2006 presents the latest education statistics from primary to tertiary levels in more than 200 countries. It also tracks the flows of foreign or mobile students. Mobile students are defined as those who study in foreign countries where they are not permanent residents.  Between 1999 and 2004, the number of mobile students worldwide surged by 41 percent from 1.75 to 2.5 million, according to the Digest. Organizations Create Scholarships for Women Studying Engineering

AMEX and the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation are creating two scholarships in Canada for women in engineering that will be awarded this fall.  "AMEC is funding the new $10,000 AMEC Masters Scholarship in Engineering and the new $5,000 undergraduate AMEC Scholarship in Engineering for Aboriginal Women. Both will be awarded annually for three years beginning in the fall of 2006. As well, AMEC is ensuring these women will have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience by offering the scholarship recipients summer employment. AMEC's total commitment to CEMF's scholarship is $60,000."

Unam Northern Campus at Ongwediva to Set Up Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology

Unam Northen Campus at Ongwediva in Namibia will set up a Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology on a 13-hectare piece of land near the Valombola Vocational Training Center.  The two education institutions will work closely with one another.  Unam sources stated that "the institution has been running a pre-engineering programme in which undergraduate students transfer to collaborating universities in South Africa after completing two years at Unam. The number and variety of engineering students who trained through the programme has been very small. However, with the establishment of the new faculty, the situation is expected to change."

5th ASEE Global Colloquium on Engineering Education

The American Society for Engineering Education will hold the 2006 Global Colloquium on Engineering Education  October 9-12, 2006 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  The Colloquium will have three themes of major contemporary interest:

- Primary and Secondary Education
- Engineering for the Americas
- Development of Curriculum for the Global Engineer

The focus of the Colloquium is on successful strategies for dealing with each of these issues. We encourage contributions that detail examples of what actions are being taken and what works and why, with supporting evidence. T
