Caledonian
College in
Sultanate of Oman Becomes Gulf Centre for Engineering Education
Caledonian College in the
Sultanate of Oman has become the Gulf Centre for Engineering Education (GCEE).
It is now an official satellite centre of the Unesco International Centre
for Engineering Education. Through its academic advisory committee and
its relationship with key figures in the engineering industry, GCEE aims to
support and develop the role of engineering education through workshops,
conferences, seminars, research and training programmes, inviting
contributions from engineering professionals, employers and those involved
in technological innovation and human resource development.
Papers
Presented at IAMU Published
WIT Press recently announced publication of Maritime
Security and MET. The book contains papers presented at the Sixth Annual
General Assembly and Conference of the International Association of Maritime
Universities (IAMU), which was held in Malm, Sweden, October 24-26, 2005.
The papers in the book, contributed by maritime educators from around the
the world, are divided into three sections. The first section consists of
interim and final reports on several research projects funded by IAMU. The
second section presents a broad range of academic papers on the theme of
maritime security and its relation to maritime education and training (MET).
Subjects covered range from the challenges faced by MET institutions
worldwide as they incorporate the new topic of maritime security into their
syllabi, to the economic costs to the shipping industry and to ports of the
new maritime security regime. In addition, a variety of other subjects are
also covered, such as the technical means to monitor the movements of ships,
and the social implications for seafarers on board ships.
Professor to Examine the
Growth of the Engineering Profession Around the World
A professor at Virginia Tech
in the United State has received a grant to research the emergence of the
engineering profession in France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Japan,
Mexico, Brazil and the United States. The project will be based on
ethnographic interviews, participant observation, and collections of primary
and secondary documents in order to map engineering education in reverse
chronology and ideas of progress in chronological order. By following
how engineers have responded to different ideas of progress, the researcher
hopes to show that engineers have been key figures in promoting the idea of
the nation around the world.
Commission Calls for EU to Increase R&D Budget
The European commission
warned European Leaders that Europe's chances of closing the technology gap
with the U.S. and Japan, and staying ahead of countries such as China, are
growing slim. The report follows budget cutbacks in research that were
decided last December. The report, compiled by a group of experts led
by former Finnish Prime Minister Esko Aho, calls for a "paradigm shift" in
European attitudes to research.
The European approach is that
we have to invest in R&D to allow us to preserve the traditional industrial
and social structures we have created, but this is clearly not working, and
we are not even approaching the goal we have set ourselves, that is the 3
percent share of GDP invested in R&D, Aho said.
