I am writing this within a few days of returning from Austria to attend the 10th World Conference on Continuing Engineering Education, which was held in Vienna on 19-21 April. This was attended by people from almost 30 countries, with large participation from China, Finland and the USA. Our thanks must go to the conference chairman Franz Reichl and his team for assembling and organising an excellent and stimulating conference. Keynote lectures by Song Gil Sun from Tsinghua University, Claudio Dondi of Scienter and Erik Duval from Leuven University gave an excellent start to the programme. These were followed later by the award lectures. The Glen Martin award was presented to the Bosch Foundation and was followed by a talk presented by Maria Rimini-Doering and the Joseph Biedenbach Distinguished Lecture award was presented to Manfred Horvat. In addition to these there were many parallel lecture sessions and workshops, which highlighted the huge diversity of CEE and the ways in which it was being addressed. Vienna itself is a beautiful city and the warm sunny weather was pleasant. The social programme included a reception in the City Hall and dinner in a typical Austrian Heuriger setting, which served to increase our appreciation of the host city. It is quite amazing how quickly the time passes from one conference to the next so now is the moment to make sure that you have the information of the 11th WCCEE in your diaries. It will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA on May 19-23 2008. Note it now! There will be more information on this available shortly. At their meeting in Vienna the IACEE Council also agreed that in 2010 the 12th WCCEE would be held in Singapore. The conference also saw the 'end of term' for the last Council and elections for the new Council and Executive Committee, a list of these appears elsewhere in this newsletter. A large vote of appreciation must be given to all those who served in various roles during the last term. I look forward to working with the many who will continue during the next term to see how we can increase the activities and the benefits to members. It was also a great pleasure to meet and welcome Hans Hoyer who has recently joined the Headquarters in Washington and who will be working closely with us. Mervyn Jones |

Amount of Women in Engineering Group Significantly Increases The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Women in Engineering (WIE) saw the largest growth ever in the number of women who joined last year. More the 1500 people joined, bringing the total number of members to about 12,000. New Approach on How to Promote Engineering An article published in the April 4th edition of the Financial Times details a new effort in the United Kingdom to promote engineering. Run by the Engineering and Technology Board, the aim "is to 'get under people's radar' by positioning engineering as a lifestyle choice." The program involves a three-part strategy. The first is to generate editorial coverage in highly distributed lifestyle magazines that cover a wide array of topics. The second is a new quarterly magazine for students called Technology Horizons. The third part is an "integrated internet strategy revolving around an online network, Scenta, created to promote science, engineering and technology." Conference Looks at How to Use Arab Intellectual Resources to Further Develop the Arab Region The Qatar Foundation and immigrant Arab scientists and researchers from around the world are meeting at The Founding Conference for Expatriate Arab Scientists to make the first step towards tackling the issue of how to tap the Arab intellectual resources spread across the world for the development of the Arab region in general, and Qatar in particular. One of the proposals before the conference is to set up a database and a website to enable continuous interaction among Arab immigrant scientists.

The Colloquium will take place October 9-12, 2006 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Colloquium will have three themes of major contemporary interest:
- Primary and Secondary Education
The focus of the Colloquium is on successful strategies for dealing with each of these issues. We encourage contributions that detail examples of what actions are being taken and what works and why, with supporting evidence. The deadline for abstract submission is 3 May, 2006.
